    Areas of Practice

Therapy that addresses LGBTQ+ issues is an essential and affirming support for community members. It offers a safe, non-judgmental space to explore identity, address mental health concerns, and navigate unique challenges. Our LGBTQ+-affirmative psychologists have a deep understanding of the distinct experiences and social pressures faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. We provide a supportive environment to promote self-acceptance, build resilience, and foster healthy relationships.

Depression appears in different forms. Some people might experience a single episode that improves shortly after starting treatment, while others may face recurrent depression with intermittent symptoms. Persistent depression is milder but can last for years. We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) to address changes in thinking, behavior, and emotions. Additionally, other therapies may be integrated to ensure comprehensive care tailored to your unique needs.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition that can be treated effectively. Therapy can greatly enhance your quality of life by managing symptoms efficiently. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERPT) to address the underlying changes in thinking and behaviors associated with OCD.

Chronic pain significantly contributes to disability, substance use, poor sleep, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Consulting a psychologist for chronic pain can be one of the most beneficial actions you can take. We primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) but may also incorporate other therapies tailored to your specific needs and preferences.

Insomnia, defined by inadequate sleep quality or quantity, can significantly impact daily functioning and overall quality of life. It often leads to fatigue, concentration problems, and reduced productivity. Therapy aims to address the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that contribute to poor sleep hygiene and disrupt the sleep-wake cycle. We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a gold-standard treatment that is more effective than sleep medications.

Stress and anxiety can differ widely, from general life worries to specific fears tied to particular situations, events, or environments. We employ various therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERPT), to address changes in thinking and behaviors that impact different anxieties.

Addiction and substance use frequently originate from underlying issues such as mental health symptoms or chronic pain, prompting self-medication. Alternatively, substance use can be a learned behavior influenced by family, peers, or others. Collaborating with a psychologist can help address the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions driving substance use. We primarily use Motivational Interviewing/Enhancement (MI/ME) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (CBT-SUD), supplemented by other therapies tailored to individual needs.

Trauma can affect individuals at any stage of life, often prompting a “fight, flight, or freeze” reaction that can diminish quality of life. We utilize Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to tackle the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions linked to trauma, focusing on critical themes such as safety, trust, power/control, esteem, and intimacy. Additionally, we offer other therapies customized to your unique needs and preferences.

    Paperwork Stuff

During the first 10 minutes of your initial appointment, you and your psychologist will review the informed consent and our practice's policies and answer any questions you may have. Afterward, your psychologist will review with you the overall agenda for your initial evaluation which typically involves speaking about the length of your session and what the focus of the evaluation will cover.

    Introductions

One of the most important steps in therapy is getting to know your psychologist and allowing them to get to know you. Your psychologist may start the session by asking what prompted you to seek therapy. Don't worry your psychologist doesn't expect you to dive into the deepest corners of your mind just yet. This is their way of establishing a conversational foundation from which they can guide you into a more meaningful discussion.

    Initial Evaluation

During your first session, your psychologist will ask about a number of things, including your job, family, friends, and hobbies. By learning about your life, your psychologist begins to build an understanding of what has been affecting you, as well as what is important to you. All of this is important in therapy because it makes it possible to talk more deeply.

    Wrapping Up

At the end of your first session, your psychologist will help you set up a second session. During the second session, your psychologist will discuss their clinical impressions with you, which will be used to facilitate a shared understanding between. The remaining portion of the session will focus on discussing relevant treatment goals and applicable treatment options that will help move you along towards achieving your goals in therapy (aka: establishing a treatment plan).
