Couples Therapy in Houston

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy, also known as couples counseling or marriage therapy, is a type of psychotherapy designed to help couples resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationships. Conducted by experienced psychologists, couples therapy provides a safe and supportive environment for partners to explore their concerns and work toward healthier, more satisfying connections. Evidence-based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Gottman Method, are commonly used in couples therapy.

CBT focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to relationship issues. By applying CBT techniques, couples can gain insight into their dynamics, address issues more effectively, and build stronger, healthier connections. The Gottman Method, grounded in decades of research, emphasizes improving communication, fostering mutual respect, and increasing emotional intimacy. Through structured exercises and tools, this method helps couples develop a deeper understanding of their relationship and equips them with skills to navigate challenges. Together, these approaches are highly effective for improving trust, intimacy, and managing a variety of relationship stressors.

    First Session

You and your partner will attend your first session together. During the initial 10 minutes, your psychologist will review the informed consent document and practice policies, answering any questions you or your partner may have. The remaining 50 minutes will be spent understanding the issues affecting your relationship and any relevant history to help your psychologist conceptualize your relationship dynamic.

    Second Session

In the second session, you and your partner will attend individual sessions with the psychologist. These separate sessions will allow the psychologist to understand you individually and discuss any personal information you might not have felt comfortable sharing in the first session.

    Third Session

The third session focuses on developing a treatment plan with relevant goals for therapy. Your psychologist will outline their approach to helping you and your partner achieve these goals. By the end of the session, you will schedule your regular therapy appointments to continue working towards a healthier relationship.
