    Areas of Practice

Therapy for LGBTQ+ issues is a vital and affirming resource for individuals within the community. It provides a safe, non-judgmental space to explore identity, address mental health concerns, and navigate unique challenges. Our LGBTQ+-affirmative psychologists are well-versed in the distinct experiences and social pressures faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. We offer a supportive environment to foster self-acceptance, build resilience, and cultivate healthy relationships.

Depression manifests in various forms. Some individuals may experience a single episode that improves soon after treatment begins, while others may face recurrent depression with intermittent symptoms. Persistent depression is milder but can last for years. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) to address changes in thinking, behavior, and emotions. Other therapies may also be incorporated to ensure comprehensive care based on your unique needs.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a treatable condition. Therapy can significantly improve your quality of life by effectively managing symptoms. We employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure

and Response Prevention Therapy (ERPT) to address the underlying changes in thinking and behaviors associated with OCD.

Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability, substance use, poor sleep, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Seeing a psychologist for chronic pain can be one of the most beneficial steps you can take. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) as a primary treatment, but we may also utilize other therapies based on your specific needs and preferences.

Insomnia, characterized by poor sleep quality or quantity, impacts daily functioning and overall quality of life. It can lead to fatigue, concentration issues, and decreased productivity. Therapy addresses the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions contributing to poor sleep hygiene and disrupting the sleep-wake cycle. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a gold-standard treatment more effective than sleep medications.

Stress and anxiety can vary greatly, from general worries about life to specific fears related to certain situations, events, or environments. We use a range of therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERPT), to address the changes in thinking and behaviors that influence various anxieties.

Addiction and substance use often stem from underlying issues like mental health symptoms or chronic pain, leading to self-medication. Alternatively, substance use can be a learned behavior from family, peers, or others. Working with a psychologist can help address the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions driving substance use. We use Motivational Interviewing/Enhancement (MI/ME) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (CBT-SUD) as primary treatments, complemented by other therapies based on individual needs.

Trauma can occur at any age, often triggering a “fight, flight, or freeze” response that negatively impacts quality of life. We use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to address the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions related to trauma, focusing on key themes like safety, trust, power/control, esteem, and intimacy. We also offer other therapies tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

This service focuses on helping patients recover from neurological injuries by improving cognitive functions, providing emotional support, managing behavioral changes, and assisting with adjustment to new limitations.

    Paperwork Stuff

During the first 10 minutes of your initial appointment, you and your psychologist will review the informed consent and our practice's policies, addressing any questions you may have. Your psychologist will then outline the agenda for your initial evaluation, including the session's length and focus.

    Introductions

Building a rapport with your psychologist is a crucial step in therapy. Your psychologist may start the session by asking what led you to seek therapy. Don't worry; you won't need to dive into deep issues right away. This initial conversation helps establish a foundation for more meaningful discussions.

    Initial Evaluation

In your first session, your psychologist will ask about various aspects of your life, such as your job, family, friends, and hobbies. Understanding these areas helps your psychologist understand what affects and matters most to you. This information is vital for deeper conversations in therapy.

    Wrapping Up

At the end of your first session, your psychologist will help you schedule a second session. In this follow-up, your psychologist will discuss their clinical impressions, facilitating your shared understanding. The session will also focus on setting treatment goals and exploring relevant treatment options to help you achieve your therapy goals, ultimately establishing a treatment plan.
