Couples Therapy in San Antonio

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy, also referred to as couples counseling or marriage therapy, is a form of psychotherapy designed to assist couples in resolving conflicts, enhancing communication, and strengthening their relationships. Conducted by trained psychologists, this therapy provides a safe and supportive environment for partners to explore their concerns and work towards healthier, more satisfying connections.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach frequently utilized in couples therapy. CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to relationship problems. By applying CBT techniques, couples can gain insight into their relationship dynamics, learn to address issues more effectively, and build stronger, healthier relationships. This approach is particularly effective in addressing communication, trust, intimacy, and various relationship stressors.

First Session

For your first session, both you and your partner will attend together. During the first 10 minutes, your psychologist will go over the informed consent document and the practice’s policies, addressing any questions you or your partner might have. Following this, the psychologist will spend 50 minutes with both of you to better understand the issues affecting your relationship and any relevant history that could help establish a conceptualization of your relationship dynamic.

Second Session

For your second session, you and your partner will attend separate individual sessions with your psychologist. During these sessions, the psychologist will aim to understand each of you individually and discuss any information you may not have felt comfortable disclosing in your initial joint session.

Third Session

This session is focused on finalizing a treatment plan with pertinent goals that will become the focal point of the therapy. Your psychologist will outline their approach to helping you and your partner achieve your specific treatment goals. By the end of this session, they will collaborate with both of you to identify a suitable time and date for your subsequent therapy appointments.
